Eliot Smith – Choreographer
Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, Eliot studied ballet and contemporary dance at London Contemporary Dance School (LCDS). During that time he became interested further in the Martha Graham Technique, a fascination that led him to be offered a place and part scholarship at The Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance in New York. He has had the pleasure to be taught by some of the world’s leading Graham practitioners including: – Penny Frank, Maher Benham, David Chase, Maggie Boogaart and Jennifer Conley. In February 2017, Eliot returned back to The Martha Graham Centre part of his successful project ‘Inviting Martha Graham back to the UK’ supported by Artists’ International Development Fund.
Before forming his own company in 2012, Eliot has danced many works for other choreographers.
Eliot Smith Company work, be it for stage or none traditional venues, has toured extensively across the North of England and other parts of the UK and Europe.
Eliot has received numerous awards from Arts Council England, allowing the Company to excel and Eliot to be acknowledged as one of the UK’s rising contemporary dance choreographers. He was recently as Associate Artist at Dance City and is currently observing on the Board of Trustees at Dance City in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Eliot and his dance company performed and collaborated with Billingham Festival since 2015, they were part of the Creative Team of 2018 production of Ikebana, The Journey in Quest of Harmony and co-directed 2019 Festival World Dance Gala entitled “Portraits of Courage” and dedicated to John Curry and local heroes from North East of England, where Eliot also created and performed John Curry dance solo
