The Global Heartbeat of a Small Town
Billingham, despite being a small town in the north-east of England, is well known all around the world as a vibrant hub for the celebration of traditional arts and cultures through its annual ‘Billingham International Folklore Festival of World Dance’ (BIFF) and through the ‘International Council of Organisations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts’ (CIOFF), of which BIFF is a founding member.
2020 marks the 50th Anniversary of CIOFF, which was due to be celebrated all around the world, but due to current circumstances all the celebrations have been postponed to 2021 and some are currently happening online.
Over the next few weeks, we will explore and share how Billingham’s cultural heartbeat reverberates around the world, through creative special messages, performances and workshops from across the globe.
This project will also celebrate the 50th Anniversary of CIOFF, of which Billingham Festival was one of the Founder Members in August 1970. The project will culminate in a Virtual Festival on our social media platforms, which will take place from 1st to 9th August 2020. We hope you enjoy our digital project “The Global Heartbeat of a Small Town” until we can welcome the festival performers to Billingham again at our next festival from 7th to 15th August 2021.
