‘
‘Self-Portraits of Frida’ is a Dance Theatre Performance inspired by self-portraits of outstanding female artist Frida Kahlo, featuring 35 Dancers and Musicians from Mexico.
“You’ve got to dance like nobody’s watching, love like you’ve never been hurt, sing like nobody’s listening, and live like you’re in heaven. ”
Frida Kahlo
Frida Kahlo, born in 1907, is considered one of Mexico’s greatest artists, a painter, famous for her work inspired by Mexican culture, an incredible and highly complex artist of her time. Frida Kahlo employed a native folk-art style to explore questions of identity, post-colonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society. She depicted her life in art, especially self-portraits to show her innermost thoughts and feelings, artistically expressing emotions of love, mental turmoil and personal stories. Struggles with her health began after a terrible bus crash at 16, following which she was bed-ridden for 3 months in a full-body cast.
Frida Kahlo continues to fascinate; her appeal is timeless, not just because of her unique style, but because of her constant desire to reinvent herself and reflect this in her art, which documents her every move. This new production Self-portraits of Frida explores her life, desires, dreams, trials and tribulations and personality using her art as a stimulus. Watch the portraits come alive as we get a chance to glimpse behind the canvass and explore the wonderfully complex woman that is Frida.
The exquisite Ballet de Grana Beatriz Ramirez and El Grullo Dance Company dancers, together with the world class soul-soaring sounds of Mariachi Rosales masters will take you back in time to share Frida’s world.
Let the music sweep you away to the magic of Mexico where beauty is much more than skin-deep.
Choreography by Orlando Ramirez (Mexico).
